Déjà vu

It’s been so long since we’ve sent out an update! You all remain on our hearts and in our prayers, whether we know your name or not.

We’ve experienced a wonderful year where numerous treatments have been successful in improving Kathryn’s health and increasing her function greatly. Her pain is no longer full body but is insolated to her left leg. With an Integrative Medicine approach to her treatment, during the last year we have seen an amazing decrease in disabling symptoms like chronic fatigue, nausea, migraine and brain fog.  We’re so thankful, it has been wonderful to see her feel better and live a fuller life.

Though her pain levels have decreased, she still lives with CRPS pain in her left leg that rates a 7 on a 1-10 scale. So after a wonderful 16 month break we are back in North Carolina today at Carolinas Pain Institute and The Center for Clinical Research for a drug study screening; the experience is very déjà vu! We hope Kathryn can participate in an open label Neridronate drug study (open label means no placebo, if a patient is accepted into the study, she will get the drug). Also, in this study the patient receives the larger dose of Neridronate that has been used for about 7 years in Italy to treat CRPS with great success.

As stated in previous updates on this site, I believe that Neridronate will change the face of CRPS!

As usual we would love to request your prayer! Here are some specifics for prayer:

  • For God’s will, trusting in His gracious and perfect help.
  • That Kathryn’s body will tolerate the higher dose of Neridronate with little to no side affects.
  • That Kathryn’s calcium and vitamin D levels will maintain at numbers that allow her to enter and stay in the study to receive full dose and complete the study.
  • That Neridronate becomes approved to use in the United States and across the world.
  • That Neridronate will be covered by insurance and affordable for the 5 million with CRPS in the United States that need it and the other millions across the world.
  • That word will get out to those with CRPS crying out to God for help with their pain; this study is looking for more candidates.

For those interested here are some of the other treatments that have helped Kathryn so much this year.

Headed home after Ketamine

Kathryn just finished 2 treatments of Ketamine in NC and we are headed home.

Her participation in the Neridronate drug study is rescheduled to October and unfortunately this is the last Ketamine that she can have before the study. We pray that she can hang in there until November on less pain treatment and we wish that drug companies would consider more carefully the daily life of a person with chronic persistent pain as they determine the disqualifiers for pain patients. One med that disqualifies her for the study is still in her body despite 6 weeks without it, but we feel confident that it will be out of her system in time for this scheduled participation in the Neridronate study.

Despite higher pain and lower meds Kathryn has gotten things rolling with college. This week on the way out of town for Ketamine treatments, Kathryn met her VCU Disabilities Case Manager who is very helpful, supportive and kind. We are so thankful for that! Because of CRPS she met an advisor in lieu of a 2 day VCU orientation, she’s taken her placement tests, signed up for a couple of classes and was able to get a parking spot close to class in order to lessen the pain of walking before class. This fall she’ll do fewer classes due to higher pain and traveling to NC for drug study.

Sending our love to you all; we’re so thankful for your prayers!

The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.
Psalm 119:130 NIV

Ketamine treatment

image

Kathryn’s having a Ketamine treatment as I write this. She’s handling it well
enough that I have time to write a few sentences :)) We are so thankful for Carolinas Pain Institute for their brave fight every day against chronic pain!!!

Yesterday I “met” over the phone a new CRPS patient that lives in Richmond. She has had CRPS for 6 years as an adult and has suffered beyond what most of us can imagine! As with many adults with chronic pain she is abandoned by her family to be her own advocate as she deals with multiple diagnoses, huge financial challenges obtaining medical treatment, and much more! Without family advocates, finding caring clinicians can be much more difficult!! Without someone who feels well and clear to speak for them, adult pain patients are frequently disbelieved and verbally abused by clinicians. Alone against a system and in crippling pain, they are lost in a recipe for hell on earth. My dear friends, please pray for Kathy!

Lord, please show me what I can do to help in the battle against chronic pain!

Prayer request:
-For all insurance companies to cover Ketamine treatments for all CRPS patients.

My thanks and love to you all!!

Big pain is back

We are so sad to tell that Kathryn is having a severe flare of CRPS pain!

She was feeling better June through October. Kathryn has been attending half days of school fairly regularly and she has really enjoyed consistent learning! She even found a little energy for extracurricular activities. She made it into Tri-M and has been preparing for All State guitar. She’s been able to attend guitar lessons twice a month and even had some energy left over to visit with friends. Its been such a relief and joy to see her have some normalcy in her life again!!

Please continue to pray my sweet friends; there are so many who live with chronic pain! Please pray for relief, strength, answers and wisdom for patients and families who fight to have a life in the midst of chronic pain!

Hi Everyone,

Thoughts of you, our Caring Ally, press on my heart today as I pray for you. I just wanted to send my love and as always, our thanks for your much-needed prayers and love.

The following was part of an online daily devotion that I’ve come to depend on. Click here to find it.

“No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.”  Psalm 33

Today, my prayer for you is that God is your refuge and strength! Psalm 46

Kathryn’s function is still better than it was before Ketamine. Her pain has returned and it seemed that we were losing ground fast…

April 1, 2013 Update written by Kathryn

Five years ago today, a very simple accident became the most complex story I’ve ever had to tell. I am not bitter on this day, because I know that without this struggle I could not have become the person I am proud to be. And I ask the same of all of you, as no amount of anger, bitterness, or sadness can ease my hardships. As I near the upcoming treatment, I become more resolute because I fear completely forgetting normalcy, and that is not an option. We all must remember with daily struggles how lucky we are to have what we do, to be able to attend school, to be able to lift your head off your pillow in the morning… there is something to be thankful for. And remembering these blessings is truly how we as human beings triumph over the adversity in our lives. I know that an attitude of thankfulness has carried me and my family through these past five years. So today I ask that, instead of feeling mournful of a painless life I do not remember, that we look at our lives and feel a sense of pride in the hardships we have conquered. Thank you all so much for your continued support and prayers; your care reminds me daily of why I am here.

Kathryn is Going to Florida for a 2nd Ketamine Treatment

Hey Everyone,

I am sorry for the long delay since the last post!

Kathryn’s RSD continues to spread. The upper left region, primarily the left hand, is now affected with pain and allodynia along with her lower left region, primarily her left leg. Kathryn living life with RSD now in her left hand is more difficult and limits many things including guitar.

All of her activities, her function and her life continue to be very affected and limited. By early June she was asking for another Ketamine treatment. Her last visit was late April after which she experienced only 10 days of partial relief. We cannot know how much, or how long, or if this second Ketamine re-boot will last. We do know that her body was dealing with at least 2 other undetected issues during the last Ketamine that may have effected how well her body responded. We believe that those issues are solved or under control.

We think that Ketamine is well worth another try- we are out of other options.

So, Joe and I are taking Kathryn to Florida for treatment with Dr Kirkpatrick August 4-14. The actual Ketamine infusions are scheduled August 7-10.

During many of these hot summer days, Kathryn continues to find the energy to smile and keep others around her smiling. She spends time with a few friends that understand her needs for very limited activity and lots of rest. She is working on her summer reading and puts on a brave face concerning the next Ketamine therapy.

Many have asked about our health insurance coverage and the need for fund raising. I FINALLY received the figures from insurance this morning and they are VERY disappointing. Here goes:

  • Ketamine infusion therapy with Dr K = $10,000
  • Anthem coverage = $600 first visit
  • $900 following visits
  • Our out-of pocket for this upcoming treatment = $9,100
  • Gifts for the first trip to Florida = $2,500

We THANK YOU and praise God for this help toward the first trip!

To those who have so graciously offered their help in fund-raising projects, we now know that fund raising will be very necessary. I hope to get busy putting some ideas into action as soon as possible.

“This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

 Matthew 6

Kathryn has less pain!

We are so thankful!  No pictures of us celebrating, not yet- I pray and hope that will come soon.  There is more work to be done.

Here are some things we’ve experienced in the last few days- and some surprises:

I asked Kathryn and Dave to give me a few adjectives describing how they feel at this point- you may be surprised… drained and tired are first on the list.  Then comes thankful, hopeful and strung-out.

Joe was the first one I called after infusion #4 was over (honestly, that was the only call I had the energy to make.)  He cried with joy, relief and hope, and in response to the loving support from VCU mentors and friends.  Perhaps we can get his thoughts onto this site soon- I love to read what he writes!

I am so thankful that while undergoing treatments #1 and #2, we were able to stay at a room that was minutes away from Dr Kirkpatrick – Kathryn needed to “get home” quickly after each treatment. Indeed, during Ketamine treatment, Kathryn had two resounding pleas….  first on the list was “please take me home!” second was “how much longer?”

Thursday night, we thought we had the hang of things a bit so we used some points and moved to a cute little Best Western on the Gulf (it has a kitchen- YEAH, real food!!)  It is an hour away from the treatment center but we’re getting familiar with Tampa.  UNFORTUNATELY, within moments of arriving (all of us very overwhelmed with the latest treatment- Kathryn still very woozy and out of it) Kathryn turned her right ankle (her good ankle.)  Any of you familiar with CRPS are CRINGING BIG TIME right now because this is the kind of injury that can flair RSD/CRPS- BIG TIME!  Kathryn (and family) had been through too much at this point, so we considered losing it. (I’m not sure how that helps things but we had reached that point.)  Instead, WE PRAYED!  We followed Dr Kirkpatrick’s medical advice AND THEN we prayed some more!  Two days later, no complications from the sprain- praise God!

Have I mentioned previously that I am thankful for your prayers!? 🙂

Sooo, now to what you surely want to hear the most about- Kathryn’s pain.  A huge part of CRPS pain is what’s called Allodynia pain. It can make falling rain feel like road burn or knives stabbing –a skin rash on her left side can raise Kathryn’s pain so high that she can’t concentrate to do school work.  After Ketamine treatment #3, Kathryn’s Allodynia pain was greatly decreased and after treatment #4, it has practically disappeared.  Yes it can come back, most people with CRPS have to be retreated with Ketamine.  How soon- we don’t know- but Kathryn is more relaxed and happy than I have seen her in some time!  Her left leg still has pain- how that will level out we do not know.  We see Dr Kirkpatrick for one more consultation before leaving on Monday.  Dr Kirkpatrick wants her to continue to take her pain medicine and to exercise 3 times a week in a heated pool for the next 6-12 months

So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who trusts will never be dismayed.”   Isaiah 28:16
